Car Key Battery Replacement — FAQ
How long does a car key battery last?+
Typically 18-36 months. Smart/proximity keys last longer than basic remotes because they only transmit briefly when the door handle is touched. If yours has lasted less than 12 months it suggests a faulty fob, not just a worn battery.
Can I replace the car key battery myself?+
Sometimes — for older flip-keys with a screw-on case it's a 2-minute DIY. For modern smart keys with sealed cases it's high-risk: the wrong tool cracks the case, and a damaged case costs £180-£400 to replace. For £8 we'll do it in 5 minutes with the correct tool, guaranteed.
Will I need to reprogram the key after a battery change?+
No. The fob's transponder is powered by the car's coil during programming/detection — the battery only powers the buttons and the keep-alive signal. A fresh battery never requires reprogramming.
My car still won't lock after a new battery — what next?+
Either the receiver coil in the car has failed, the fob's microswitches are worn out, or there's a deeper immobiliser fault. We diagnose all three on the spot and quote the right fix before any further work.
Do you cover BMW comfort access / Mercedes Keyless Go / Audi Advanced Key?+
Yes — all three use a CR2032 cell. We carry the correct opening tools for each so we won't damage the case.
