Lost your car keys? Here's what to do — step by step
1. Don't panic. Check the obvious places first (jacket pockets, bags, between sofa cushions, the car itself, the last shop you visited). Most 'lost' keys are found within 24 hours. 2. If you have a spare, use it. Drive home and arrange a replacement spare at your convenience — it's the cheapest scenario. 3. If you can't find them and have no spare, call us. We need your reg, VIN (on V5 or windscreen plate), photo ID, and the car's location. 4. Decide whether to deactivate the lost original. If you genuinely lost the keys in a public place, deactivation is the security-conscious choice. If you're confident they're somewhere in the house, you can leave them active and save £60. 5. We attend, cut and code on site. 60-120 minutes later you're back on the road, with a fixed receipt for insurance purposes. Do NOT call the main dealer first — you'll lose £150+ on recovery before you even discuss the cost of the key itself.
Will my insurance pay for lost car keys?
Most fully comprehensive policies cover lost or stolen keys under 'key cover', often with a £500-£1,500 limit. We provide a written invoice and diagnostic report so you can claim on your policy. Note: if you have a 'keycare' add-on (often £20-£40/year), the replacement is usually fully covered with no excess. Worth checking your policy schedule before paying out of pocket.
Are stolen keys the same as lost keys?
From a security perspective they're far more serious — anyone who finds them knows where you live (from the V5 in the car, your insurance documents, or a tracking device). If your keys were stolen alongside ID or documents that identify your address, we strongly recommend full deactivation and a fresh set. We can also fit a OBD port lockout or steering wheel lock at the same visit for extra peace of mind.

I've lost my car keys — what's the fastest way to get back on the road?+

How much does it cost to replace lost car keys?+
Basic transponder keys from £80, remote keys from £140, smart/proximity keys £220-£380. All-keys-lost adds around £80-£120 for the immobiliser security reset. Every quote is fixed before we attend — typically 40-60% under main-dealer pricing.
Can you replace a lost car key without the original?+
Yes — that's our most common job. We cut a brand new key from your VIN (using your V5 or photo ID for proof of ownership), code it to your ECU on site, and deactivate the lost original for your security.
What if I've lost ALL my car keys?+
All-keys-lost is fully supported — we'll perform an immobiliser security reset using the car's PIN code, then cut and program a brand new key from VIN. 60-120 minute job depending on make.
What proof do I need to show you?+
V5 (logbook) or insurance schedule in your name, plus photo ID matching the address. If the car is registered to a business, a letter on company headed paper authorising the work. We can't cut keys to a car without proof of ownership — this protects you against theft.
Should I deactivate the lost original?+
If you lost the keys in a public place (gym, restaurant, train), yes — deactivation prevents anyone who finds them from using them. If you're confident they're at home, deactivation is optional (saves you £60). We'll talk through both options on the phone.
Will my insurance pay for this?+
Most fully comp policies include 'lost key' cover, often £500-£1,500. We provide a detailed invoice for your claim. If you have a 'keycare' add-on the replacement is usually 100% covered.
Is this cheaper than the AA / RAC / Green Flag?+
